Kusiya Keraw (also widely called Kushi Kerao, Kusiya Matar, or Desi Choti Matar) is an ancient, highly specific regional legume native to the farming belts of Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is distinct from common field peas due to its tiny size and deep cultural roots.
The Grain Profile: These are exceptionally small, round, hard, and wrinkly wild peas. They typically sport a mixed color gradient ranging from dark olive-green to earthy brown.
Religious Significance: Kusiya Keraw is highly sacred in Eastern India. It is a mandatory ingredient used to prepare traditional prasad and festive curries during major regional fasts like Jitiya (Jivitputrika Vrat) and Chhath Puja.
Taste & Texture: It has a highly rustic, deeply concentrated, and complex nutty flavor. Because it is naturally hard, it requires overnight soaking before it can be pressure-cooked. Once cooked, it becomes smooth on the inside while holding its small round shape perfectly.
Best Used For: Preparing traditional Kerao ka Saag, regional festive Jhor (thick dal curry), or soaked and fried with local spices as a crunchy tea-time snack
